Destruction of Cane

Inside Track
In 2014 some areas were hit by an unexpected frost. In many cases the cane was not suitable to be sent to the mill and many growers resorted bailing the tops to be able recoup some income. This was again done by growers affected by the extreme hail damage experienced in April this year.

Destruction of Cane

In 2014 some areas were hit by an unexpected frost. In many cases the cane was not suitable to be sent to the mill and many growers resorted bailing the tops to be able recoup some income. This was again done by growers affected by the extreme hail damage experienced in April this year.

If cane is rejected infield the grower may make arrangements to get what income he can from the crop. The problem arises when this is done without the mill having the opportunity to accept or reject the cane. The mill has first right of refusal to the cane and therefore needs to be informed if a grower intends on destroying or harvesting cane for customers other than the mill.

We therefore request all growers to request permission from the mill if they intend using cane for purposes other than sending it to the mill in writing.

Brief:

  • Production loan facility: A loan facility is available to all suppliers of UCL. The loan is charged at an interest rate of prime – 1.5%. Please contact Heidi Tredoux 033 5011 600 (ext. 3001)/ tredouxh@ucl.co.za should you have any questions in this regard.
  • The 1st cane estimate is due on the 26th of January.
  • All growers are to hand in their Susfarms progress trackers for the 2014/2015 season with their first estimate.
  • The Annual Cane Grower Day will be held on the 9th of February at the Dalton Agricultural Hall.

Bark

The past few months of bark production have not been good at all, mainly because of the below average rainfall. By the time we close the year we will have achieved 50% of normal production.

We look forward to an improved 2016, which will start with deliveries being accepted from 07:00 on the 7th of January. From the 7th to the 9th bark will be accepted between 07:00 and 17:00 and then from Monday the 11th of January we will revert back to 06:00 to 22:00.

With the unpredictable rainfall we request that growers plan their stripping programmes such as felling two rows and leaving two rows that should it get drier later in the season you have something to fall back to.

As mention earlier with only 50% of bark having been received, growers will not be able to catch up in a short time; balance to deliver will be spread over the remaining 20 weeks. We are always short of bark on Mondays and Saturdays, here lies on opportunity to catch up some shortfall. Should you have good ideas regarding these two days please share them with us.

Our report back meetings will be held from the 16th to the 18th of February. Please diaries these dates we will confirm the venues and times shortly.
