Purchase of extra chains by growers

We have received requests from growers to purchase chains over and above their existing allocation. It was decided that this could be done under the following conditions.

  • Growers will still receive their 1½ days’ worth of allocation in chains. If a grower wishes to purchase more chains he may do so up to a maximum of 2 days’ worth of allocation.
  • The chains are to be used to increase stock on zone for paydays, rain days, etc. Not to build extra stock from Monday, leading to old cane!
  • The chains will become part of the pool and will be maintained by the factory.
  • The normal levy will still apply to these chains to cover the cost of maintaining them.

Any grower that would like to purchase their own chains should please contact Pravesh Sewpersad.

April/May points to focus on:

  • Schedule your irrigation, do not over-irrigate. Plan drying off programme for you irrigated fields.
  • Complete your autumn planting; it should be finished by now.
  • Plant a green manure crop in those fields scheduled for replanting in spring. Crops to consider, serradella, grazing vetch, lupins and oats.
  • Plan replants for next season and place certified seedcane orders with LPD & VCC.
  • Monitor your ripening programme, apply Fusillade to June/July harvests – this is especially important for annual growers. If you are unsure about using Ethephon or Fusilade please contact Bruno Eggers.
  • Annual growers must plan to begin delivering on the 29th of May.

Brief:

  • A subsidy of 50% will again be in place for all cane ripened by the 31st of March 2017. All invoices must be in by the 31st of May to qualify.
  • Growers are requested to hand in their Susfarms Progress Trackers for the 2016/2017 season by the 31st of May.
  • The UCL AGM will be held on the 3rd of August.
  • A reminder of the SA Canegrowers Annual Roadshow to be held on the 9th of April 14:00 at Torwoodlea Lodge & Conference Center.
