A great deal of effort has been made to increase the resistance to Eldana for obvious reasons. The con to this is that Smut and Eldana seem to have an inverse relationship. The greater the resistance to Eldana, the greater the susceptibility to Smut.

The hot and humid weather conditions so far in 2016 have been ideal for smut and thus we have continually found smut in N54.

Midlands North is not a high pressure smut area and the old varieties that used to get smut have been degazetted so most young growers do not have the disease on the radar. We will have to become more vigilant regarding smut in our new varieties that are released in future.

Brief:

  • For those that have not yet received their Raw Material Supply Rule Book please collect your copy from Desiree Moodley at the Agri Services office.
  • All spiller growers and interested parties are invited to a meeting on the 5th of April at 15:30 at the Unicorn Club.

Bark

The zonal bark meetings were very well attended and we thank you for your input.

Important information that came from the meetings:

  • There has been an increase in the bark price.
    o A R1’443
    o B R1’259
    o C R750
  • Please communicate nondeliveries to Pravesh so that alternative arrangements can be
    made.
  • Over deliveries are still on going, please keep to you allocation.
  • The amount of foreign matter being delivered is problematic and seems to be on the rise.
  • The extract factory will be running through the Easter week to try and catch up on lost time. We will need every ton of bark this season. To achieve this we will need to deliver until the end of May. Please plan accordingly, e.g. strip 2 rows and leave 2
rows, it will be worth your while.
